Supporting the 2017 AIA WA Architecture Awards

USG Boral joined the Western Australian architectural sector in Perth on 23 June to celebrate excellence in design and construction at the 2017 WA Architecture Awards. We were proud to be presenting the Commercial Architecture category of the awards and there to congratulate the winners. This was the first year that USG Boral has been involved with these prestigious state-based industry awards as a sponsor, and we sponsor similar awards in other states.

The principal accolade from the Australian Institute of Architects WA chapter for Commercial Architecture is the Ross Chisholm and Gil Nicol Award – won this year by Gresley Abas Architects for the spectacular Wembley Golf Course hospitality redevelopment project.

The main award for Commercial Architecture was earned by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects for their Elizabeth Quay Gelato Kiosk and the Commendation award by the firm Whitehaus for their Youth Involvement Centre (YIC).

Adam Johnson-Kain, Architectural and Specification Manager for WA, attended the Award night at Perth’s Crown Towers Ballroom to present the Commercial Architecture Awards. He was pleasantly surprised when the Commendation Heritage award was won by the Fratelle Group for their restoration of the 19th century Guildford Hotel, which included the use of USG Boral SHEETROCK® and FIBEROCK® boards.

More exciting still, The Goods Shed art gallery, a community project for which USG Boral had donated FIBEROCK® board, went on to win the main Heritage category award for Cox Howlett and Bailey Woodland with Griffiths Architects. A collaboration between FORM – an independent, non-profit cultural organisation – and LandCorp, The Goods Shed is a new space for creativity, learning and community, transformed from a heritage railway building in Claremont with the generous assistance of architects, building industry manufacturers and other organisations.

Peter Wood, USG Boral’s National Architectural and Specifications Manager, attended with Adam and found the Awards ceremony very inspiring. “Thank you to the AIA WA chapter for a great night. The breadth and depth of the projects on display were fantastic in their scope. All of us at USG Boral look forward to continuing to support architecture professionals in achieving their design visions over the year to come,” he said.
